Traces of the Lukas Enembe Stadium, A Space that was originally a School

goodmorningpapua.com – The National Sports Week or PON XX Papua 2021 is taking place in various places. One of the primary venues for this national sporting competition is the Lukas Enembe Stadium.

At the Lukas Enembe Stadium, the opening of the XX Papua PON 2021 was taken place on October 2, 2021, and in the same place, the closing is going to be held on October 15, 2021. The Lukas Enembe Stadium is located in Kampung Harapan, East Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, Papua.

A researcher from the Papua Archaeological Center, Hari Suroto, recounted what was in the stadium and the area around it when the Dutch occupied Papua. “During the Dutch administration in Papua from 1944 to 1962, Kampung Harapan was called Kota Nederlandsch Indië Civil Administratie or Netherlands-Indies Civil Administration or NICA,” said Hari Suroto.

The Dutch government in Papua or also known as the Gouvernement van Nederlands Niew-Guinea built three vocational schools in NICA City. “Now the school land is a place in which the Lukas Enembe Stadium stands,” he said.

The three schools built by the Dutch government at that time were an agricultural school, a livestock school and a forestry school. All the students are native Papuan children and the cost of education at this school is fully borne by the Gouvernement van Nederlands Niew-Guinea.

All students live in the dormitories. They got pocket money every month. The first grade students got an allowance of 10 guilders, second grade students got 20 guilders, and the third grade students got 30 guilders.

The lessons at this school are entirely in Dutch. The curriculum in the three schools is two years of theory proceeded by one year of practice. The Dutch government then closed all the schools in 1962.

As known, on August 15, 1962 the New York Agreement was signed by the Government of Indonesia and the Government of the Netherlands facilitated by the United States. One of the agreements in the treaty was that the Dutch government had to hand over Papua to the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA) no later than October 1, 1962.
