goodmorningpapua.com – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a series of earthquakes in the last 20 days. The northern part of West Papua is included in the category of an area with an active earthquake zone.
The results of BMKG monitoring in the last 20 days in Indonesian territory, clusters of active earthquake zones are located in western Aceh, Mentawai, Lampung, Sunda Strait, all southern regions of Java, Lombok, Sumba, Central Sulawesi, Maluku Sea, Seram, and northern West Papua.
Earthquakes in the Java arc recently occurred sequentially from west to east, from the Sunda Strait to the south of Central Java. However, BMKG has not been able to confirm that this earthquake will continue to East Java, Bali and Lombok.
The BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator, Daryono said, the series of earthquakes was centred in the Indian Ocean with the source of the earthquake in the megathrust zone, Benioff, and active faults on the deep sea floor of the Eurasian Plate.
“We must always be vigilant, since strong earthquakes can occur at any time in the active earthquake source zone,” said Dayono, Tuesday (10/8/2021).
